How Healthy are Your Arteries?

According to the British Heart Foundation cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and stroke accounted for nearly one third of all deaths in the UK in 2010

Most of us know the things we should be doing to reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease. These often include eating more healthily, exercising, watching our weight and finding ways of dealing with the stress in our lives.

Green Apple Nutrition Ltd provide a quick, simple and non invasive assessment that provides valuable information regarding Arterial Elasticity and Heart Rate Variability.

Arterial Elasticity

This assessment measures the level of arterial elasticity by the analysis of the pulse wave produced every time the heart beats. A healthy arterial system involves arteries that have good elastic properties, a decline in arterial elastic function can be measured by the alteration to the pulse waves shape and velocity. Arterial elasticity naturally declines as we age, however lifestyle and dietary choices play an important part in the degree and timing of those changes.

Heart Rate Variability

The second assessment measures ‘Heart Rate Variability’ or HRV. HRV is a measurement of how variable our heart rate is from one beat to the next. Optimal health relies on an healthy cardiovascular system and a constantly varying level of HRV. A decline in HRV is associated with fatigue, chronic inflammation and diabetes.

Research from 2010 stated that ‘high HRV in the elderly represents a marker predictive of longevity’* In other words the more variable our HRV is as we age the longer we are likely to live.
